I have the S2 and love it. Trying to get the flash to only provide a little fill and so I went to the over/under flash control button. Set to the most I could -3 and it's still more flash than I want for my Portraits.

Any way to control my flash to "less fill" a little more???

Dude,

Try increase distance to subject or using different focal length lens to give you the distance you need and still be able to fill the frame. Hard to bounce since there's no swivel on the SB23.

Unfortunately, this flash is oddly shaped so I could not find a defuser to fit it. So, I made a defuser using opaque white plastic. I cut the plastic and made a square box to fit over the sb23. The defuse cut the flash down by about -1.5 to -2 stops. If I wanted more than that, then, I compensate on the camera. Locally here, Tap plastic caries plastic sheets in difference colors. you can also find them at craft stores like Michaels or Office Depot or Office Max , around $3-$5 for an 8x10.

Another obtion, buy an 'electric eye' from a camera store ($14+/-) and use it wirelessly (trigger by your on-camera/internal flash). I bought one from Wolf Camera made by Quantaray (not made by Nikon but works fine :-)). I can use it wirelessly in manual mode and adjust the flash-to-subject distance accordingly. I find this way works the best since you can manipulate the shadow effect to some extent. BTW, to use in this mode, your S2 needs to set to SPOT metering or Manual. Other metering mode will not works since the preflash from the internal flash will cause the SB23 in slave to go off too early.

Hope that helps,
