I've just ordred the new 24-120 VR lense, and now that it's been out for a few months in the states , i'm wondering how it performs

I bought it after reading glowing reports in magazines and internet forums. But how is it on the S2, by now many of you would have tried it , any quirks?

I do a lot of handheld quite murky photo's , you know lurking up dark alleys ,and in strange dark buildings, don't ask me why ? i just do (and i think i'm normal ?)

So any feedback you can post will be very much appreciated

Happy shooting

Hi Sandman,

Out on the road and have been camping. This is the first I've been able to access the web. While on the road I have had some very good success, I can actually handhold to 1/15! It has been very good. Over the last 10 days I've amased 5 gig in RAF images to post process when I get home, I have spot checked several and am happy with them so far.

More to follow on my return home ...

Take care,

Thanks Kevin ,i got it yesterday and plan a trip out weekend to try it out, but the weathers changing over here, after nearly two months of fine and hot (for england anyway)weather 75-90 degrees. this week has been overcast and drizzly.

But lets look on the bright side ,if not outside then maybe i can find some inspired indoor shots to try out the lense, just gotta think of somewhere. cross that bridge when i come to it, it might turn out fine.

I'll post a picture when i can. How was your trip , did you go everywhere you planned, was the advise others posted usefull ? , i would guess it was. Did Tom show up, bet he would if he could .To me in england that sounds a trip of a lifetime . over here we would have nothing to equall it. post some pics.

Happy shooting

Hi smunky
I'd love to send you pics for you to look at , trouble is i've only had it three weeks, so i have'nt got that many shots. It depends what you want to shoot, i don't do flowers, birds ,action, or reportage. I do scapes and travel shots, so these pics might seem limited.
Love this lense ,it stays on my camera now , fast A/F, no hunting quite light , and the VR is great in low light, i've included all the info i can with each pic, only thing is , i've just noticed they are all shot at F8 which i find is about right for sharpness.
I had a bit of trouble obtaining this lense ,there is a shortage in the U.K. untill mid august, i don't know your location so you may or maynot have any trouble.
Please view these on the basis of the lense , not the composition ,tried to find 4 different kind of pics. Hope these help

Hi Sandman,

One question. Any problem about barrel, distorsions?. I heared about it but your photos seems to be ok.
Regards.

Hi bofors
I don't take the sort of pics where barrel or pincushioning is much of an issue, however this lense shows hardly any sign of it , it is a zoom, so all that extra glass would make some sort of distortion inevertable.
I've looked through my shots to try to find one that has vertical lines near to the edge, however with the viewfinder only showing 95% of the frame , you would need a vertical just out of the line of view, to get a true perpective, however this shot shows plenty of verticals , best i could find. without going out and reshooting.

Well i,m very happy with mine andre, i'm just going to look at your pics , but you might have already seen mine in the same forum, if you have ,you can see the quality of the lense (not the photographer), it's great whether or not you turn on the V.R. or not.

Have fun with it.

Thanks Brian.
Yes, I've seen all of your pictures. Yours contributed to my decision to go buy one.

I thought there was some pictures from at least one other person with that lens, but you are of course correct - they all had your name on them.

Unfortunately we have had some lousy weather today, so I still haven't had a good chance to try this lens out.

I can really see a difference though just shooting around the house - the VR does work!

Andre, i was really surprised at the low light capability of this lense, while that shot in the tower surprised me , i really could have got it sharper, this is one taken of the bells while climbing up the staircase , believe me it was dark , think this was taken at iso800.

ISO800 with the on-board flash and at 24mm, right Brian?

Right on two, wrong on one, so was i, had to check the exif on this ,ISO200, and i forgot i'd had the flash on (you can see it in the bells).

Thought so. :P Can see the shadow from the lens that you get when using a wider angle lens (like 24mm) and the on-board flash. Hated that.

Hmm...will have to give low-light a go. I'm still itching to try out this lens. Weather was lousy yesterday, and had to work today.

Well, I did get this bird yesterday while it was overcast...
