View Full Version : DEAD D2X

My new D2X just died. The metering went south, autofocus stopped working, images or menus would not stay up on the LCD. I swapped out the battery for a fresh one to no avail.

Dead in the water. The sad part is, it happened during a workshop,
( considerable time and expense), and I have two jobs this week where the camera is needed.

I am particularly upset by the fact that a guy at the workshop who had a D2H had the EXACT same issue. Is this a known bug that has been built into the D2X?

People were worried that this "bug" might be in the D2x as well. I have a co-worker who's D2h went out in a similar fashion and is also worried about his D2x doing the same. Looks like Nikon might get burned on this shortly as more D2x's possibly fail? Sorry to hear it.

Yes, it appears so, and I'm livid. Apparrantly, this is a well known, and well documented bug in the D2H, and now in the D2x.

I am most displeased. A multigenerational bug is inexcuseable.

Nikon, are you reading this thread?

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that :(

At the VERY least you should get it replaced for free from Nikon IMO. Free= not paying for shipping too.

Do you guys think there will be a d2xs in the near future?

A replacement is a given- I will fight them to the death to avoid getting back a "repaired " camera...

As to a D2Xs in the future, I am so pissed there my not be any Nikons in my future. I can't even get a loaner, and the shop I bought it from can only give me a rental for $100 per day! I have three assignments this week-UGH

DARN! So sorry to hear!!

When it rains, it pours. Just sent mine back with focus problems a few minutes ago...gives me something to look foward to when it comes back, eh? :(
Apparrantly, this is a well known, and well documented bug in the D2H, and now in the D2x.I wasn't aware of this problem in the D2H, anyone have a link?

Damn, you guys. I'm getting gun shy about the D2X reading about all the problems wiht it just from folks on this forum.

Nah don't Ron, all new cameras have their issues, just read the other boards it's all there, the percentage with problems overall is still very small. I can say that even with mine having to go back.

I'm sorry I missed you today Dave, it was a screwy Monday let me know if you need me to help in anyway down here.

I do remember all the issues with S2 when it first came out and I'm darn glad I didn't listen and bought one (two) anyway. I would love for the D2x to be as great as it can be.

I subscribe to several lists on the internet with emphasis on Nikon D2x cameras. Trust me, there have been small amounts of problems, well within the statistical probability of a new camera, but most are ecstatic over the D2x. The main problem with the D2x is not the camera but the lack of NEF support in photoshop and a fight over open standards for RAW which seems to have been successfully transferred from Adobe's fault to Nikon. I had pixel problems with my S2 and still have it and still like it a lot.

I doubt that I ever will pay $5000 or more for a camera body. Since my bread and butter comes from legal work and not from photography, I can not justify such an expensive play thing. I remember when I bought my F5, it was less than 2K and almost gagged buying it. Now I guess that there is a difference between a 1K camera (D70), a 2K camera (S3) and a 5k camera (D2x) and even an 8k camera (Canon something or other) but my eyes are getting weaker, my shoulder is getting weaker for carrying that weight and my 16X20s seem to generate interest in the subject matter and not in the camera used.

Would I like a D2x. You bet I would but I also like my collector cars, my new contemporary furniture and furnishings and most of all, I like my European travel.

Back to the original point--sorry that some have had problems with their camera but failure is a statistical probability and the forums are full of horror stories since those are the only ones that write. Satisfied customers make bad press.

I think that you were just unlucky.
I hope that you get a brand new D2X as replacement.
Maybe the QC is not quite as tight as it could be as there do seem to be a number of faulty D2H units around.
I cant work out if this is due to Nikon trying to make as many units as possible for launch stocks and not checking them thoroughly enough.

Unlucky, yes.

Nikon sent me a new one ( the previous one was serial # 532). The new one wa sperfect out of the box.

The first one was bad from day one, as is typical with electronic items that are faulty. Strangely, in raw mode the original one gave me 31 frames on a 1GB card, the new one gives me 38. :

Go figure...

Glad to hear that you got a New one! I'm very happy with my D2x and how it shoots. So . . . this is a thumbs up for the D2x. :righton: I agree with the others that you will always have some percentage of problems with ANY new product. At the least, Nikon did stand behind their camera and replaced it with a new for what ever reason you want to use. That to me is pretty good PR. :)
Good luck and may the "Photo Force" be with.
