Hate to show my ignorance, but if you don't ask...what is the difference between Telephoto and Telezoom lenses?

Is the teleconverter worth getting for the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8?

Ready to drop the $$ for the S2 and I'm getting Great info from you folks, I'm remote and don't have the option of getting my hands on one or asking questions from a store. You're a great group, maybe I can contribute some day.

Thanks,
Dave

"Telephoto" means any lens with a focal length longer than that of a "normal" lens for the format. For an S2, any lens with a focal length longer than about 35mm would be a telephoto.

"Telezoom" is a lens with variable focal length that extends into the telephoto range. Most times it's used, it would mean a zoom that was telephoto through its entire range, but some people would call a 28-70 a telezoom for the S2.

I have the Sigma 70-200 EX and I just did teleconverter tests on it using both the Sigma 1.4 and 2x converters. I was very pleased with the results of both, but the best results are with the 1.4x. The 70-200 is a really sharp lens, and the 1.4 doesn't mess it up badly at all.

Thank you for the explaination Tom. Appreciate the input on the Sigma 1.4 and 2x. Is the Sigma teleconverter proprietary ie., can it be used on the Nikkor lens too?

Concerning the 70-200, what is the min. focal length? Seems like I can't find it anywhere.

The S2 is already consuming me, can't wait until get my hands on my own!

Not sure what you are asking. With a 70-200 zoom lens the min. focal length would be 70mm and the max 200mm.

If you are talking about the 1.5 conversion factor the min. focal length for the S2 would be approx. 105mm.

I imagine you are asking about the closest focusing distance, which according to the B&H website is 70.9".

Hope this helps,

Justin

Since I ask this question I have gotten the S2 and have been shooting, reading and learning. Things are starting to gel, thanks to you folks.

Actually that is what I was looking for Justin, thanks.

I ordered the 105mm Macro with the body and exchanged it for the 60mm Macro so I could get more field at closer range. I'm now waiting for the Nikon 24-120mm VR to use as a general use lens. I do plan on getting the 70-200, but undecided whether to go with Sigma or spend more for the Nikon.

Thanks again,
Dave

Dave - I don't know if you've seen this thread over in the photo's section, but I highly recommend the 70-200VR. I love mine. This thread shows some pictures I took while on a Sea Doo on the water bobbing around...

Congrats on the purchase!

Just posted a couple more in the Photo's forum under "more VR".

I too have the 70-200 afs-vr. Those were great shots, shows what the lens is capable of, along with the photography.
