An avatar is a small image. An avatar can be displayed beneath your name in your posts. If you look on the left side of the posts you'll see them.
You don't need one, they are simply a way to personalize your posts.
Find or make any 20 KB or smaller image that is 100x100 pixels or smaller and upload it in your "user cp" area (small button at the top of the forum pages).
See the second-to-the-last question on the following page:

Wow! I changed from Bart Simpson to me!
My Avatar is from a self-portrait that I slightly retouched for use in a magazine ad for a client that makes CMYK printing ribbons. The mainline in the ad read: "See Color The Way Company Sees Color!" (Name of company has been changed.)

By any chance, did the kids in grade school call you four eyes?
;)
I like the avatar!

I did a double-take every time they did.
When I wore glasses, it was worse.
Now it takes 40 minutes to put in contacts.
You should see my sunglasses.
I close one eye and the color balance changes.
You should see me wink my eyes - counterclockwise.
I can wear bifocal bifocals.
My eyes are calibrated to SWOP standards.
Those 3-D movies with the red and green glasses make me sick.
For my driver's license, I passed the eye exam -twice.
I can see thru the S2 viewfinder and watch the LCD at the same time.
I see a color gamut smaller than a person with RGB eyes.
My nickname was C. Myk.
Thankfully, I never have to wear mascara.
