View Full Version : File Type Renamed??

I had an interesting thing happen today. I'm on a PC. I saved a jpeg as TIF in CS and the file type designation now says, "Microsoft Office Document Imaging File" in the folder directory, not TIF.
Yesterday I updated my Microsoft Office Products online as per advice received to help guard against virus threats. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem, the files are all there but if I search by file type>tif in CS they pop us as Microsoft Office Document Imaging Files.
Any possibility this could cause a problem in the future should I ever need to supply a tif for processing by others?
This happened once before when I had PP8 loaded on another computer. After that load, all my jpegs became PP8 jpegs.
Any ideas?

Just the wonder of Bill Gates making our lives better ... for him.
You need to change the association of the TIF extension to Photoshop (or whatever your choice). To change the program that opens a file
Open My Documents.
If the file you want is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Right-click the file you want to open in a different program, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Change.
Click the name of the program in which you want the file to open.
This change affects all files that have the same file name extension as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens a .jpg file, all .jpg files will open in this program.
You can also change the program that opens a file by right-clicking the file, clicking Open With, and then clicking the program name. If the program you want is not displayed, click Browse.

Thanks Dale, that was pretty slick but the files still show as Microsoft in the directory. Not that big a deal but is there any way to have them listed as TIF in their directories?
I do notice that once opened in CS the title bar says "Title.Tif". Its just that the directories still say, 'Microsoft.....'. Maybe I'm being too anal about this.

Windows2000:
Goto to File Explorer > Extras > Folder Options > Fiel Types > [select the file] > Advanced (lower right side) > [Edit the text to: whatever]
WindowsXP:
I dont have an XP installation in reach here but it should be the same.
Most apps claim the right to rename the type info to their pleasure.
Always check if there is a file association option in the install process of programs. Yes, Microsoft might have dropped that bc standard is what M$ says.

Not heard of this particular annoyance before Mike but then I'm only on Office 2000 so don't know what trickery Office XP might get up to. I'm sure its a hidden setting in Office that's causing the problem but look forward to someone giving us a definitive answer.
Here's an illustration of Dale's right click "open with" as it appears with the default setting of "Windows Picture & Fax Viewer".
Always as well to choose "Custom Install" rather than "Typical" or whatever they call it when installing a program, some of them like to take over all the file types in your machine - Real & Quick Time Players are the worst culprits here.
Cheers, Robin
