Yes, it should work without 123's, but why should you remove them??? if it works OK with them I mean :)

Either the rechargables are not providing enough power or, more likely, you have a stuck sensor switch in the 123 compartment. You can try flicking the switch around to unstick it with your finger and see if you can feel it unstick or make sure that it's not in the depressed mode.

I still don't understand why they had to put two kinds of batterys to S2 pro. The expence it doesn't justify the money I make with this camera, with cold contitions is better to wait the summer to use an S2. Anyway, I've played with the sensors, they are ok and I used another AA but still not working. Thank you for your advice, I'll put a gun to S2's head and loose my cool, perhaps it will work.

The S2 is based on Nikon's N80 film camera, which uses only CR123As. In order for Fuji's digital backend to work on the hybridized camera, more power was needed, and Fuji decided to use AA-size batteries, which can run the entire camera -except the pop-up flash.
The circuitry must be a mess inside. Dead CR123As in the camera kill the whole thing. Taking dead CR123As out will allow most of the camera to run on just AA batts. Alkalines often have barely enough juice to get things done, so NiMH are recommended. Using AC power will drain the CR123As if you leave them in, but doesn't drain the AAs. AAs can power everything but the flash. CR123As will lengthen the lifespan of AAs by handling the "N80 parts" of camera operation.

Tom. I have a friend with an S2 and its using it only with 4 AA nimh 2300. I did that as well I took the 123's out, put them in the bin and I used the 4 AA he was using for his S2. The AA has enough power for his S2 to, then what is wrong with mine? Thanks

Did you recharge the AA's before using them , you said you used the ones your friend had , AA's use about 10% a day if not used so if you had a time delay and/or your friends were exhausted that would explain it .
Try recharging them .
Also to activate the camera after taking out the 123's you'll need to depress the shutter button .

You've said something interesting here. "Also to activate the camera after taking out the 123's you'll need to depress the shutter button ." So, to make it work I have to activate something. Your advice might be the resolve but I'm not shure I understand it. what exactely do I have to do, please? Thank you
After long discussions I did it. No, did not solve the problem but I took a screwdriver and open the S2 to verify the AA and 123 conections but ther is nothing wrong with those. The 123's is pushing a switch and two sensors, this way the S2 knows that it has 123's and gets it's power but if logical would be to work only with AA when 123's are out I don't understand. Someone else was inside this S2 before me, the video out jack had scratches and the yellow metal was blue, my guess would be that someone insertes ac in video out.
