We have finished installing a new web based IRC chat client. This means more functions with no nag messages.

Wait.. you heard me right. No *Nag* messages. I know you are asking yourself, "How do we do it?"

I will tell ya.. Volume volume volume.

Just click the IRC Chat link along the top bar

Enjoy

Just noticed. Very nice BJ.

If you all look at the bottom of the forums where it says who's online, BJ has also added a "who's in chat" so you can see who's in chat without actually going in there.

BJ, great news but I don't know if it is me but my mac at work can't connect. See attached pdf

I have logged onto another forum and they have the chat on sceen all the time. This is the link http://www.reptilecrazy.co.uk/

Is this possible on this forum?

I am not a techi so it might be a complicated thing to do.

I looked at reptilecrazy and it looks like they are doing the same thing while using port 7000. We use 6667. The java client is loading, but it seems you might be having a firewall/connection problem.

It is also a possibility that you attempted to connect during a very short period where I had the IRC server down for a quick configuration change.

One way to check if it's a firewall issue is to try and connect directly to our IRC server with an IRC Client. I found a good IRC Client for the Mac. It can be downloaded here:

X-Chat Aqua (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17132)

Once you have the client software installed, try connecting using the server address of theswampbbs.com and port 6667.

If you still have problems connecting with the Mac IRC Client software then chances are good that there is a firewall issue.

For instance, currently my office has a firewall that blocks all but basic web traffic so I am unable to connect to the IRC while I am there.

Please let me know if this helped any.

Thanks for the info Shaun,

I think it must be to do with our server. I tried to use the software you posted but it keeps crashing so I can't try it. I will have a go at home.

I just went onto the reptile crazy site and I can post there so I now don't know if it is a firewall problem or not. Hopefully another mac user might see this post and have a go from the link.

Thanks for the hard work and effort you and swampy put in.

No problem.. another IRC client that can work on MacOS 9 or later is Snak (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10490) .

I think the first one requires MacOS X.

btw.. real name is Jarrod. You might have be thinking of SSonnentag.

Sorry Jarrod,

Too many late nights and early mornings with the baby.

I tried with snax and got the same problem not being able to connect. I don't know why the firewall will let me connect to reptilecrazy and not your server.
I will have to try at home at the weekend or when I next get online at home. Perhaps other mac users might be able to help me.

Poor Port blocking from your IT's side? They could very well be blocking "standard" ports and nothing else, so while port 6667 (standard IRC port) won't connect, you can connect to it via port 6668 (if the server you're connecting to is configured for that port, which ours is not). This is poor port blocking on an IT organizations part. :) We (at work) block everything but the basic stuff to make it easier to control. So, port 80 and port 21 are open to outbound connections (not inbound unless started by an inside connection) and a few other odd ports are open, but everything else is closed.

I didn't realize we had port 6667 blocked at the office either since I have a direct connection back to my house, that's the route I usually take instead of the route you all take. :) Kind of a personal, it's all mine, bandwidth connection.

At work I connect to a router server via port 80 and then I presume it then allows certain access. Many people in the office are not allowed access or have restricted access (set up sites they are allowed to visit) to the net but I was lucky enough not to have any restriction to the sites I can visit. I can't ask them to check the problem out as I shouldn't be surfing the net for my personal use.
I am not a techie when it comes to computers, I can use the Mac but how it works is another matter.
