Well the D2Hs seems to still be a 4MP camera. I know I know it's the quality of the pixels but if they would have made it a 6 or 8 MP camera they (we) would have been so much better off. Or if the S3 was the same price range as the 20D. I'm not freakin happy about all this. Am I the only one that this stuff is bugging?

No your not alone as I am to somewhat surprised it remained a 4mp camera but then it is made for the working photographer after all. I find the new metering system interesting though.
Most odd though isn't it, they increase the buffer etc but don't upgrade the sensor

Well they may have made it for the photojournalism or sports photographer but where have they left the portrait/wedding photographer. They work with their equipment also.

Woudn't you not love to be a fly on the wall in Nikon's headquarters right now (with your japanese translator of course) :D
Seriously, sometimes I'm wondering what goes on behind their doors. A 4MP camera in the days were even el cheapo P&S cams come with 5MP and up is suicide from a pure marketing point of view. Quote from Photo Life: "The 5-MP resolution level is quickly becoming standard ... so we're no longer covering the four-megapixel models." Ouch!!!
While the res might be just enough for newspaper photographers, it will still be hard sell with all the competition from the big C, epecially with the supposed pricetag of 3500USD. Don't forget, Nikon has to sell the body in sufficient numbers to be successful. And I just can't see that to happen without a major miracle. What's even more worrysome for me, is the lack of any announcment pertaining a successor to the "midsized" D100. Where would it fit in Nikon's product line-up, now that there is the D2Hs?

I have to agree with Chris here, noone of us needs a 4mp camera.
BTW I happened to see some files and prints from a friend's EOS1 DS Mk2 this morning. They were just amazing, no more words..... With a rez of 16,7mp and a file of 50mb is a temptation.
A temptation of US$ ~7500 though :(

I do wedding work with my cameras (2 x S2's). They have made very good photos (when they weren't to soft to use). I have to look at what will be a necessary upgrade in the next 6 months. Granted the S3 is going to make nice images, I think it's lack of battery and focus upgrade as well as the $2500 price tag pretty much rules it out for me. The D70 is a fantastic camera but I'm just not sure it's a upgrade. Where does that leave me looking at this point? Possible conversion to the dark side.

THAT ARE MY EXACT THOUGHTS TOO!!! Are you a psychic by any chance? Hey, the next time you spoon into my dark err... gray matter, get a proper mind/thought release from me first
Let's see what Nikon has coming down the pipeline; maybe there'll be a unexpected surprise (and I don't mean another Coolpix :D ).
Cheers,
Chris

that is kind of weird.. particularly when Nikon makes pro-sumer and consumer cameras with 7 & 8MP sensors, makes you wonder.
FWIW- I'm happy with the S3, up until today that I noticed a magenta vertical line and now it's going back to Edison NJ! Still, I think I would recommend this camera if you don't need speeeed.

Chuck, that's what the D2x will be for. Remember, we're living in the age of specific design technology in photography now. No one camera will ever be the do all for every intended use like the F5, N90s, etc were. Just the way it is I'm afraid. PJ's and Sports shooters will love the D2hs, Wedding shooters love the S3, etc etc etc.

I hear ya, but I don't charge enough for weddings to justify the D2x. No matter what Nikon has a hole in the lineup with no 20D competition. And look how many of them I can get for the price of a D2x.

There is a strong rumor that Nikon has several other DSLRs in the wings due out later this year. One is a D90 or some such thing and may bridge between the D2x and D70. And don't forget that PMA is just around the corner! Might be a surprise there.

Hey if Nikon replaces the D100 and has it available by the summer then all would be right with the world. Assuming it's a worthy replacement, which I would assume it would be due the D70's success. Go Nikon Go
