Got a strange one?.
I lent my mate a unbranded 256 C/F card , he had it for about a year using it on a small nikon compact with no card reader , so he was downloading direct from camera .
He returned it last week , told me he formatted it .
Now being nosy i thought i'd use ''image recall '' (software i've used before with great effect) to see what pics he had been taking , put it in , fired up the software and it locked up my computer solid , the card reader light was flashing but the software refused to work , every thing i tried came up ''not responding '' the reader , the software , even my computer . control /alt/ delete brought up the task manager which showed 3 things not responding , could'nt switch off anything .
In the end i had to turn off the computer with the button , but then the card reader without the card still flashed , so i had to turn off the power .
Tried this several times all with the same effect . it also does not show the card reader with the card in under ''disc management '' under storage .
Now the odd thing is i can put the card in any of my camera's take shots and they show up on the camera , but try to download through the card reader , or the camera's software direct , it locks everything again .
It's only a cheapo card , and i was going to use it as a frisbie , but wondered before i do that , if anyone has any idea's .

Brian,

That's what you get for being nosy

O.K. I would of tried the same thing.....

Seems like the card should read if it looks O.K. in the camera. Have you tried to download any other cards into your computer? Also, formatting it yourself may clear it up. Think it may have been dropped or something?

Brian,
seem to me ( as a non computer specialist ) that your friend has formatted that card in a format, your computer can't read.

Maybe you try the following : Formatting in FAT16...

If your card-reader crashes your computer, it sometimes helps to unplug the card-reader an plug it into another USB-port.

Just my 2 cents

Brian, have you tried to format the card with the camera?
It happened to me twice, the only way to make it work was to format it by the camera itself. It works fine since.

Tried that , formated it in the ,S2 , D70 , even my little Canon A85 , takes pictures in all 3 shows up on the lcd of all 3 .
Put it in the card reader or download straight from either camera ........lock up , every time .no matter which card reader i use or computer(i tried my laptop and office machine) all the same , it just locks up my computer .
By now my guess is that it's trying to find the folder on the card and can't , so it goes around in a circle , but as i can't access the card from anywhere i can't check if the folders there or not .

Wilm action shot , i'll swap you an action shot of my ''frisbie'' for one of you and some german nurses .

One last thought on this , my mate is not savvy on either camera's or computers , now i can't ask him today as he's on holiday , but my guess is that over the last year instead of formating the card , he's just been deleting the shots .
I know that there can be an issue with just deleting files and corruping the card , wonder if this is what happened here .
i'll ask him later , maybe he can shed some light on this .

This is a puzzle all right. When your friend gets back have him try to use the card and get the pictures into his computer. If he does not have the same problem then let him continue to use it. You might also find out that he was having trouble and that is why he formated it and returned it. If that is the case then tell him he owes you at least a pint for the use of the card. I really doubt that there is anything that your friend did that could cause this problem, but you can sure take advantage of the situation and get a few pints out of him for fun. Lastly, if it soes not work then be sure to break it and throw it away so nobody tries to use the thing thinking it is still good. I use to pack rat things that were broken but lived to regret it when the wife thought they were good to use.

Beat you to it Wayne , phoned him this morning asked him if he had any trouble , he said not .
Said he was sorry and he'll buy me a newcard , i said ''DON'T WORRY , YOU'VE HAD THE BLOODY THING FOR A YEAR SO I'M NOT MISSING IT ''
And then i told him he could have it back and use it , he said cheers ''i'll buy you a pint'' .
Job done .

Brian,

I got the opposite problem with one of my 1GB Lexar (40x). I had just bought a new Minolta 7D for my wife. Unlucky me, camera turned out to be fauly. Could not read any CF card. It knew it is there, try to format it, half way it gave up. Tried three cards (2 1GBs and 1 128MB). Out of that, with just one try, one of the card could not be read from my S2Pro. Other two are OK.

In any case, I have no problem to see the card in computer (can read and write), but no camera except my Canon Powershot S20 can read the card. Formated both FAT and FAT32. Formated in my canon and try in Fuji, no luck. Tried in Minolta 7D (none defective one), still no luck.

So, I ended up getting a new CF card.
