I have just happened across one of these screens. A 17" Iiyama E434S and I have a problem when sharpening my images. Once I have processed all the imaeg etc, its looking as if they are waaaay over sharpened. But all the ones I had done previously with the SAME settings are fine but done on a CRT monitor.

Now what I am viewing on shouldnt make a difference, so how come am seeing this ???

TIA

Actually, what you view images on does significantly matter. I never us a LCD for critical post processing or color work. CRTs are still the best way to go, LCDs save energy, space and are sexy they aren't up to snuff in the sub $1000 market yet in my opinion though.

Have you tried, viewing these images on a CRT yet?

Take care,

The thing is ... adn this is what I dont understand ... the images when viewed at 100% are bang on and sharp etc ... no problems under viewing or anything. I am running at 1280x1024 aswell ..... but only under sharpening ... all other processes etc under PS:CS are fine ... just the sharpening aspect under USM ..... simply confusing me thats all as to why the same settings look so different under the two monitor setups.

Also, I no longer have the CRT, as its being used on my daughters Xmas perssie now :help:

Out of interest, what are the implications of this for editing on a laptop?

KMR,

From my experience, I just can't get near the image quality from a Laptop LCD screen compared to a decent CRT screen and not near a Lacie 22" Blue as far as depth of colors, transitions from one color to another, and dot pitch. I have 5 PCs at my house and one Powerbook I purchased about 5 months ago. I love the Mac environment, just can't do any real color or finish work on it cause its a 1024x768 LCD screen. I have a maxed out Sager (PC) laptop as well, 16.1" 1600x1200 resolution LCD screen... You'd think that would be fine but a 19" Sony has more smooth look to it. If price is not an object there are worthy LCDs out there. You are talking $1500 up to over $3000. I would definitely consider the 23" and 30" LCDs Apple has as main screens to work off of. I'm sure that there are some others from Mitsu, NEC, etc. that are a bit cheaper and along those lines as well.

Take care,

Thanks Kevin,
I'm thinking about replacing an old(ish)Dell desktop- with a portable? which one not too sure of yet- Would like to get away from Windows but Powerbook is pricey for comparative specs now! The screen is a consideration , therefore your advice is very helpful!

Kevin,

Have you tried connecting a crt monitor to the powerbook?
I use a powerbook G3 prismo on location and do basic changes just to show the client but when I get back I hook it up to a 17" crt monitor to do colour critical adjustments.
